The EarthLab UCSD Community Station
In partnership with San Diego Unified School District and Millennial Tech Middle School, Groundwork San Diego-Chollas Creek is turning a 4 acre open space parcel into a dynamic outdoor learning lab for Chollas Creek students. Students are engaged in state-of-the-art science and technology education while making valuable contributions to the improvement of their watershed. The Earthlab is serving as a hub for information sharing with nearby schools, neighborhoods and civic groups through student community service. The EarthLab is preparing students to enter the 8 million STEM jobs anticipated by 2018. And, perhaps most importantly, the Earthlab is creating knowledgeable, caring stewards of the environment who understand people and the natural world need each other to survive and thrive.
The EarthLab is named a University of California Community Station
UCSD defines a community station as a place-based effort that links community organizations and university groups to meet commonly defined goals. The center links research, teaching and service missions of the University. Practicum courses provide graduate and undergraduate students with authentic learning, while offering 5-12th grade students living in and around the EarthLab the opportunity to work and learn with brilliant college students. It is a win-win for all.
