Chollas Creek Calendar

Events

Groundwork San Diego Chollas Creek and Millennial Technology Middle School invite you to...

Conservation Science Saturday

Date: March 20, 2010
Time: 9am-11am
Location: Encanto Canyon (meet in the east end of the Malcolm X Library parking lot)

With the help of Groundwork San Diego members, students from Millennial Tech will be planting native plant seed, which will eventually provide a home for the cactus wren, a native bird. Cactus wren habitat restoration is taking place right in our backyards, in Encanto and Radio Canyons. These canyons are some of the richest bio-diversity hotspots in the county.

Please support your son, daughter or community member in their effort to restore native habitat and to protect disappearing species. Information stations will be available for community members.

The event is free, and no RSVP is needed. Please call Jean-Luc at Groundwork (619-543-0430) for more information. If it is raining on the morning of the event, it will be rescheduled.

Walk the Watershed 2008

Cleanup crew Gathering

On April 5th we hosted a successful Walk the Watershed event. Walk the Watershed was an outdoor, fun, interactive, free event aiming to introduce and connect members of the community to the opportunities and challenges that their unique urban watershed, Chollas Creek, holds. The Saturday event began with a kick-off media event for Groundwork San Diego Chollas Creek at 38th & Alpha Street Park which is one of our restoration projects. After the half-hour opening ceremony, GWSDCC lead a roughly two mile, four-stop tour featuring new projects along the creek and the organizations that are responsible for them. Attendees at the Media event included several elected officers and other dignitaries. The event ended at the YMCA and we provided the attendees lunch, booths with composting and zero waste demonstrations, African drumming and dance, an herpetologist display with live native animals, and a presentation by Mike Brunker, executive director of the YMCA. We are planning our 2nd Walk the Watershed event in August and we will continue upstream.
